We have exciting news! We will soon be packing up our desks, transporting our books, and heading back to the renovated Temple of Justice. Back in July of 2022 the library, along with the Supreme Court, moved out of the Temple while the building’s HVAC system, plumbing, and lighting were overhauled. The renovation is almost complete and we can’t wait to go home!

A photo is displayed at right. It shows the lower portion of two rows of granite columns. The photo accentuates the architectural details of the granite. To the left is white text with gray bracket graphics. The text reads, “We are Moving! Upcoming closure and service changes.”

To prepare for the move, we will be modifying our services and closing our doors for a while. Here is what to expect:

September 16 to 30 — Reduced Hours

Between Monday, September 16 and Monday, September 30, we are reducing the hours that our Tumwater research room will be open to 11:00AM to 3:00PM.

October Library Closure and Limited Services

We will close our doors in Tumwater on Tuesday, October 1 and are scheduled to reopen in the Temple of Justice on Monday, October 28. During this time our reference services will be limited.

We will continue to provide phone and email services for most of our closure. However, we will not be answering phones or responding to voicemails and emails during the week of October 7–11.

This image shows a calendar page for the months of September and October, highlighting the dates of library service changes. The heading is “State Law Library Move Schedule.” Text below the calendar reads, “Tumwater hours 11a-3p from 9/16 to 9/30. Library closed to visitors; remote reference available from 10/1 to 10/4 and again from 10/14 to 10/25. Library closed to visitors; no reference services provided from 10/7 to 10/11. Scheduled to open at the Temple of Justice on 10/28!”

During the move, staff access to materials might be briefly affected, and there could be interruptions to phone service too. Reference staff may need additional time to answer requests. If you have urgent legal research needs, please reach out to your nearest county law library or public library.

Returning Books

While we are closed, we ask that you do not return books by mail. Books can be returned to the Washington State Library in their book drop or lobby (6880 Capitol Blvd. SE, Tumwater, 360–704–5200). Otherwise, please plan to return checked out books after we reopen at the Temple of Justice.

Before you visit the library, we encourage you to check our website, library catalog, Facebook page or LinkedIn page for unexpected changes to our hours and services. We will also publish updates here during this period of transition.

We greatly appreciate your understanding as we make our way home! (SC)
