This is the time of year that we receive the lion’s share of our new books at the library. Here we highlight some of these new additions to the Washington State Law Library collection. The Supreme Court and Corrections : The Landmark Cases that Have Shaped America’s Prisons and Jails, by William C. Collins, KF9728 .A53 C67 2019. Former Washington State Senior Assistant Attorney General for Corrections William C. Collins summarizes twenty landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases that had important implications for correctional institutions. He also highlights other cases of note on topics ranging from discrimination, access to courts, and conditions of confinement to due process.

A Lawyer’s Guide to Working with Special Needs Clients, by Richard A. Courtney, KF311 .C68 2019. Written for the general practitioner, this American Bar Association guide provides background on the issues that often come up when representing special needs clients. The introductory chapter familiarizes the practitioner with many disabilities and emphasizes that understanding the client and their support network is the first step in helping a disabled client. Subsequent chapters cover special needs practice issues, public benefits, special needs education, and special needs trusts.

Foreclosure Defense : A Practical Litigation Guide, by Rebecca A. Taylor, KF697 .F6 T39 2020. An update to the first edition which was published in the wake of the Great Recession and prior to the conclusion of government investigations into the foreclosure crisis, this concise volume aims to assist homeowners and their attorneys with litigation strategies to protect their homes from judicial foreclosure. With another foreclosure crisis looming, Foreclosure Defense is a great reference for the practitioner or homeowner seeking information on what to expect in a foreclosure action and assistance in navigating alternative dispute resolutions.

Hot Topics in Civil Rights Enforcement : The Role of State and Federal Agencies in Protecting Civil Rights, Washington State Bar Association CLE, KF411 .A75 H68 2019. Designed to help practitioners gain a better understanding of the government agency processes involved in certain civil rights actions, this coursebook spans civil rights topics including discrimination in public schools, sexual harassment in the workplace, sexual orientation and gender issues, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Course presenters are the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Instruction, the State Human Rights Commission, the State Attorney General’s Office, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Washington.

Newly arrived Nutshells — West Academic’s Nutshell Series provides a concise introduction to many legal topics for the pro se litigant as well as the law practitioner. The State Law Library collection includes many Nutshells.
