The 11th annual Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit came to Oswego State on October 21 this year. It featured four distinguished Oswego State alumni, ABC-TV national correspondent Kendis Gibson ’94, chief meteorologist at WYSR-TV News in Syracuse Dave Longley ’94, identities editor at Mic.com Michelle Garcia ’06, and Jennifer Sanders morning/noon anchor at WYSR-TV News Channel 9 in Syracuse.

This year’s theme of the summit was, “A Mile in My Shoes.” The panel explored their talks with discussions in the issues of diversity and equality and many other topics.

One independent theme that the panelist talked a lot about was getting involved in anything and everything and doing things now to help students become successful in their futures. Alumni panelist gave tips on how to “get ahead”.

The Oswego State media outlets did an excellent job in covering each event on campus. Using different apps such as Periscope, to broadcast live right from a cellphone, users were able to keep their audience up-to-date on everything that was the media summit. WTOP10 and WNYO were also doing interviews with the alumni.

WNYO even did a post show talking about the overall summit.

This year’s media summit did not disappoint. The energy that it brought to the students on campus was incredible. Students covering the event got an amazing opportunity to not only listen to some successful alumni but they got to cover the event live, almost like the students were working for a major news corporation. The event has raised the bar for next year’s media summit, which will, once again, be a success.
