An Afternoon at Walla Crag and Castlerigg

One last Lake District walk for this trip

After years of dampness, grey skies and gales, I got incredibly lucky with the weather on this trip to the Lake District. I’d met a friend for a chat about writing, life and cake in the morning of my last full day there, but I had the afternoon free under occasionally blue skies and after weighing up my options, I decided on another walk from Keswick, this time heading south out of town on the eastern side of Derwentwater, heading for Walla Crag.

From Ordnance Survey/OS Explore

Like my previous walks up Latrigg and Catbells, this is a popular and relatively easy short walk from Keswick, with lots of options for places to go on from there. On a day with less tired legs and more daylight, I might have headed on towards Bleaberry Fell and the ridge from there to High Seat, but instead I was going to stay low, and either come down the other side of Walla Crag through Falcon Crag then return to Keswick along the lake side, or cut across the fellside towards Castlerigg. (Observant readers will have seen the headline and worked out which option I took)

Walking is a way of getting somewhere, but it’s also a way of finding yourself.
