The Precipice Walk
A dramatic name and great views on a relatively easy walk
It’s rare to see walks given names on Ordnance Survey maps. The long-distance paths get them, printed neatly under the lines of green diamonds that snake from side to side across the full map, but it’s rare to spot a short walk marked out very clearly. But there it is in black and that shade of golden apricot OS uses to mark open access land: Precipice Walk.
I was in Dolgellau for a couple of nights marking a late friend’s memory by running the Parkrun there and looking for something to do for the rest of the day after I’d recovered from the run. For a while, I was tempted by the thought of ascending Cadair Idris, seeing the way it looms over the town as a constant presence in the skyline of southern Eryri/Snowdonia but I was planning on Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon the following day and thought two mountains and a Parkrun in two days might be pushing my aging legs just a little too far.
Instead, I found my eyes drifting on the map to the north of the town, spotting Precipice Walk on the map and after checking that it was a name and not a warning of imminent doom made that my plan for the afternoon.
