Map Proposal:

The southside of Chicago is the most diverse area of Chicago. In the southside is where the majority of people of color live and a large part of the southside is the Latin community. My map proposal is to map every church and religious space in my neighborhood, Brighton Park. Brighton Park is a dominantly Mexican neighborhood. In Mexican culture, and in most Latin cultures, religion plays a heavy role in personal development; and in history, when a new land is settled one of the first buildings constructed is a church. I find that it being constructed first shows heavy significance in religions part in culture. The story of this map is to show the importance of religion in Latin culture. With Brighton Park’s sixteen churches, spanning to just about every corner of the neighborhood, it is clear that being in the vicinity of a church is important to the people who decide to live in Brighton Park. It also shows that a generalization can be made regarding Latinos and being a member of the church.

Response to Malchik:

Walking is a privilege, because there are others who are incapable of walking or incapable of walking safely. Malchik references Raquel Nelson, who because of her skin tone was convicted of vehicular homicide for her son’s death despite the fact that she was WALKING. For her, she did not the privilege to walk as she pleased without some kind of consequence. The threats to walking include the lack of control of an easy way of life, and even the possibility of injury. Where you live influences how you live in that if you feel safer or feel more privileged in that area, you are more confident in where and how you walk versus someone who does not have that privilege who lives in fear of what will happen if they dare take a step. There is also the kind of privilege that comes from economic status. If you have the means to live in a nice neighborhood comfortably, you may have a more positive perspective. If you do not have the means and have to live in a less desirable neighborhood, a whole new set of troubles may follow you living in that neighborhood.
