Interweaving With Lincoln Park

walking chicago: a history in footsteps

Starting off right into an alley I walked upon this very eccentric and colorful mural that seemed out of place. Walking along the streets to go to OZ Park I stumbled upon many different eye opening scenes such as, angry drivers, museum looking houses, scaffolding and construction, greenery, and of course lots of cute dogs. Along with that the smells felt like they changed every five seconds with going from smelling authentic Mexican food to smelling just straight garbage but it somehow smelled worse than that. As I stumbled onto the park you can see the vibrant city come to life with all of the bikers, tourists, walkers, families, and children all having a great time enjoying themselves. The more eye opening experience I had on the walk was about halfway back from the park on my way home, I stopped and just stood there for a second and just stared at nothingness. This was maybe the first time I’ve been on a walk by myself without any distractions and it felt completely different. Being able to think out loud and feel the atmosphere around you felt great. Being able to create my own path and walk where I want as well as just being able to freely think clear thoughts about any random thing I saw on the walk was very refreshing.

“Cities are forever spawning lists”

A city has so many characteristics, especially one like Chicago. You can’t just drive through the city and look out the window and try and understand it that way. You have to intertwine through the city, feel the earth below your feet and smell the wonderful aromas that make up the entire city. Each block and street has something to tell you and being able to walk and take down notes of what you see truly immerses you inside of these places. The lists that are taken down of the atmosphere, time, street name, types of architecture, all tell a different story within those places and help the regular walker understand the true passions of a city. Every city is changing at rapid speed nowadays with gentrification and new money so with that what you see might not be there the next day or it could change a whole lot in a year. The ever spawning lists these cities have is a very real thing and they truly are changing rapidly as each city has its own set of agendas and ideals you can’t really blink without seeing some sort of change in a city.
