A map, to me, is a guide. It tells you where to go when you need to know. It there when you’re lost, and it comes in handy in a pinch. Krygier and Wood define a map as a graphical proposition. A map basically shows you everywhere you can go, but it’s for the most part (at least in terms of physical, paper maps) for you to find out where you are, and where your destination is in relation to that. Maps are usually a really good reflection of the world they depict, as most of them are supposed to be accurate in order for you to be able to navigate wherever you are. However, they are still two dimensional, so you don’t really get a sense of scale of any buildings. We make have made maps for centuries, and its main function is to help us navigate, but it was also used to help us chart unexplored territories.
