Week 10

According to Malchik, if you live in the city, you have access to more resources. You are able to walk to places rather than rely on your car. But if you live in more rural areas, grocery stores tend to be far apart and usually rely on the access of a car. Even if you choose to walk, it seems that it is dangerous to walk due to highway accidents. If you choose to walk, you tend to live a healthier life because walking is linked to improving your health, such as things like depression or diabetes. Walking does have its risks; a car would run a pedestrian over this has been linked to the speed limit not being obeyed. There is also the danger of being attacked, women are at high risk of getting assaulted. Ways to reclaim the streets is to use technology in our advantage, create apps that help indicate which parts of the city are unsafe to walk in. Allow restaurants to block off a street to have outdoor dining. (174)

The pictures help demonstrate how I felt more of an outsider because of people’s views. I felt unsafe seeing these signs up on their yards. Even if I was not certain if they stand by everything this person represents, it still felt like I was being attacked and pushed back from being part of the neighborhood.
