Do Dogs Doubt?

Do you think dogs ever have self doubt? Do you think there are days where they just look at the Amazon Prime delivery guy and think to themselves, nope I can’t do it today? I usually bark at you like you are trying to kill my owner, but today, I just don’t have the confidence to take action.

As I sit down to write on this Monday morning, my own self doubt is doing its best to knock me down. My own inner voice is doing everything it can to tell me that I am in imposter, that I have no business trying to writer and that I should just stay in my lane. Sometimes our inner voice has this way of being a real asshole.

Stop and think about how your inner voice has been speaking to you lately? Would you speak to your mother like that? Your friends? If the answer is no then we have work to do.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and most of us will spend the day focused on expressing our love for someone else. So what if today, we took a few minutes just to acknowledge our love for ourselves? It’s not selfish, it’s not conceited, it’s necessary.

In Jon Acuff’s book Soundtracks he recommends picturing yourself turning down the volume on negative self talk. I like to go one step further and turn up the volume on i by Kendrick Lamar. That is how I tell my inner voice to get lost and remind myself that I love me. (Everybody lack confidence, how many times our potential was anonymous) — the beat and the message of this song generates momentum for my day.

Love conquers all, so surely some self love can shut down your inner voice the next time it tries to mouth off and destroy your confidence.

There is just no need for self doubt. I can guarantee you the dog is going to bark at the Amazon guy today when he delivers the last minute Valentine’s Day gifts.
