Do you remember the first time you had to apply information you learned in a classroom? You’re about six years old and you’re attempting to complete your first homework assignment. The problem is that the process was only taught to you once, which means that applying what you learned in an entirely different context is quite a challenge. Regardless of the fact that you’re only six years old, the struggle to remember the details of how to complete a totally foreign task on your own is more common than you think.

Fast-forward twenty or so years and your new boss has assigned you to attend an employee training seminar in order to learn how to navigate the company software. But at the end of the seminar you leave feeling even more lost and confused than when you started. You have no idea how you’re going to complete your tasks, let alone sign into your computer.

The bottom line is that the misconception that people have the capacity to remember information learned in a classroom setting is based on completely outdated and inefficient methods (see video below).

Employee training has evolved significantly over the years, and it’s time we acknowledge it. From the industrial revolution’s one dimensional classroom training, to today’s dynamic contextual learning and everything in between — we’ve undergone a revolution when it comes to understanding how the human mind works.

Take a look at the following infographic which breaks down everything wrong with enterprise training today, and how to move forward with a new and innovative solution:

How Humans Learn

The Way People Digest Information is Very Different Than in the Past

Companies are competing with other distractions that employees face daily from their mobile devices, social networks and more.

“The average employee spends 6.5 hours per week learning or trying to learn.” -Deloitte

Who is Today’s Employee?

Employees face a heavy cognitive load….

The Workplace is Becoming Digital

Organizations are undergoing digital transformation and daily work is increasingly reliant on technology. IT decisions are decentralized with local and disparate ownership. Organizations are shifting from using one large vendor to best-of-breed solutions for each business process, whether HCM, CRM or ERP.

Cloud Technology

Technology is undergoing frequent improvements and updates, forcing the employee to constantly run to catch up.

Software Must be Trained to Work With Users

Training isn’t about teaching employees how to use software — it’s about making employees productive.

WalkMe’s Three Layer Approach to Adoption…

1. Guidance

Contextually drive to action with Walk-Thrus, visual cues and strategically places content.

2. Engagement

From reactive to proactive by adding rules for who, where, when and how to engage.

3. Insights

Collect and analyze usage data to identify obstacles and opportunities to engage.
