By Engineers, For Engineers
Introducing the @WalmartLabs Engineering Blog
Our new blog is live at https://medium.com/walmartlabs!
Engineers at @WalmartLabs often call ourselves “the world’s biggest startup.”
Just how big is “Walmart Scale”? Each week, 260 million customers visit Walmart’s websites, apps, and 11,500+ stores around the world. And our team of more than 3,500 associates in Silicon Valley, San Diego, Portland, Brazil, United Kingdom and India helps power the tech behind all that shopping.
Yet despite our size and our growth, @WalmartLabs remains an engineering first organization, built upon principles of dreaming big, tinkering with new ideas, and empowering individual engineers to make a huge difference at-scale. This blog is the place for those engineers to tell their stories.
We’ll share stories of everyday innovation — both huge breakthroughs and little victories — written by engineers, for engineers.
You’ll see deep-dives into Walmart’s most challenging scalability problems.
You’ll read about micro-optimizations that empower developers to be more efficient and less repetitive.
You’ll learn how to make cross-browser test automation fast and reliable so that you, too, can depend on it for continuous delivery.
You’ll learn about Walmart’s involvement in Open Source — the projects we create, the contributions we make, and how you can participate.
What you’ll also see are real stories of risk taking, failures and setbacks, what we learned from them, and how we grew. These are stories of real-life engineering journeys and not just the “happily ever after” outcomes.
What you’ll find is that, in many ways WalmartLabs is like many other startups. We’re Agile, we use a blend of tech, we do pull requests.
But there are also elements that make us unique and make this blog worth your read. For example, we have a ton of imprints that you’ve probably never heard of, like ASDA in the UK, Massmart in Africa, or Bodega Aurrera in Mexico — and many more! Building solutions and trading technology and processes across these brands presents a unique challenge. We firmly believe in an Open Source mindset, whether we’re sharing our code with someone across the hall, or across the world — inside or outside of Walmart.
