A WaltzIn Guide to Eating On The Westside

By Kelly Bylsma

The team at WaltzIn has many things in common, but one of our favorites to talk about is our love of food. We come from all parts of the food business — front of house, back of house, tech, pop ups, you name it — and because we currently all happen to call the Westside of Los Angeles home, we thought we’d share some of our favorite Westside eats. Stop in to have a bite and kill some time next time you’re stuck on our side of town around 4 o’clock, just waiting for the 10 or the 405 to clear up….

Huckleberry Cafe, Santa Monica, CA

Breakfast & Lunch:
Huckleberry Cafe —
(Ryan) Based on the number of times I’ve thought to myself, “That’s the best _________ I’ve ever tasted,” I must give them credit. Try the breakfast burrito. Call ahead, the line is long. http://www.huckleberrycafe.com/, 1014 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90401, (310)451–2311

Lodge Bread Co. — (Kristel) Their bread is really delicious, their coffee game is strong and don’t even get me started on that massive cinnamon roll. Yum! http://www.lodgebread.com/, 11918 Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066, (424)384–5097

La Isla Bonita, Venice, CA

Food Trucks:
La Isla Bonita
— (Kelly) One of the few great taco trucks on the westside, and open all day long! Their tacos are really good, but I almost always go for their ceviche tostadas — so tasty! 400 Rose Ave, Venice, CA 90291, (310)699–8575

Pico House — (Ryan) Once tempted, it’s hard to resist their balanced whole grain bowls with short rib or pork , plus cream puffs and other delectable desserts from their pastry chef. Yes, this truck has a pastry chef. I fear it’s only a matter of time before their talent is poached and the team dismantled, so get it while it lasts. http://picohouse.com/, (818)926–2905

Mexican:
La Fiesta Brava
 — (Kristel) I like their chicken tacos, and their chicken soup is my go-to for the occasional sniffle. http://www.lafiestabravademo.com/home, 259B Hampton Dr, Venice, CA 90291, (310)399–8005

Tocaya Organica — (Melissa) Massive delicious burritos and authentic street tacos. Beachy and casual vibe — guac is a must order! http://www.tocayaorganica.com/, 1715 Pacific Ave., Venice, CA 90291, (424)744–8692

Milo & Olive, Santa Monica, CA

Pizza & Pasta:
Scopa Italian Roots —
(Nick) Exposed brick, great cocktails, pasta for days. http://www.scopaitalianroots.com/, 2905 W. Washington Place, Venice, CA 90292, (310)821–1100

Milo & Olive — (Kelly) A carb lover’s dream. Open kitchen. Gorgeous wood burning oven. Order the garlic knot (with marinara!) as you wait for a seat because it takes 15–20 minutes and is SO WORTH IT. Get the pepperoni pizza or the bolognese! http://www.miloandolive.com, 2723 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90403, (310)453–6776

Casual Dinner:
A Frame —
(Ryan) relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to let go and remember life’s basic pleasures. The price is right and they have something for everyone. Great for grabbing a quick bite during a busy week to catch up with old friends or make new ones at one of their communal tables. http://www.aframela.com/, 12565 W Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066, (310)398–7700

The Humble Potato (Kristel) Karē fries are perfection and their Jack’d burger is really yummy too! http://humblepotato.com/, 12608 Washington Blvd #b, Los Angeles, CA 90066, (310)881-9498

Hatchet Hall, Los Angeles, CA

Dinner Date:
Hinterland —
(Melissa) Perfect date spot with an NYC vibe. Go for happy hour and get the homemade burrata cheese. http://www.hinterland.la/, 2917 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405, (310)399–0805

Hatchet Hall— (Kelly) Always a good vibe. Always a great cocktail. Always an amazing, ever changing menu. Go in, have a really special meal, and then continue the good conversation back in the Old Man Bar after dinner, where they have comfy high-backed leather seats and an awesome whiskey selection. http://www.hatchethallla.com/, 12517 W. Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066, (310)391-4222

Cassia (Nick & Ryan) Spicy dishes and lots of counter space for walk-ins. If you’re into fire, sit at the grill — it’s a real show. Sitting on the patio in the summer is money. http://www.cassiala.com/, 1314 7th St, Santa Monica, CA 90401, (310)393–6699
