Fact Check - Is Shell Giving Sh9,000 Cash Prizes in Its 130th Anniversary?

By Nyakerario Omari

This link shared across Whatsapp claims that the Shell company is allegedly giving cash prizes in celebration of its 130th anniversary. According to this promotion, 100 users are randomly picked every week who apparently stand a chance to win Sh9,000 after filling a survey.

Shell Company is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies located in over 70 countries. Among these countries, Shell Kenya, is one such licensed brand.

Piga Firimbi previously looked into scam alerts including one which claimed that CocaCola was offering job opportunities early 2021. Another claimed to be having job vacancies at Quickmart Supermarket.

Shell Kenya in this tweet published on August 23, 2021 maintains that it is not running any promotion at the moment.

🚫 Beware❗of the fake post doing rounds on #Whatsapp & #SocialMedia. We are not running any promotion at the moment. This is being circulated for clickbait #KaaChonjo! Don’t click on the link or forward it to others. Find out more here; https://t.co/EBtJJDg9m0 pic.twitter.com/ZFSfQtc6jT

Shell Kenya also issued a statement warning that the promotion is a phishing scam in which users’ personal data could be extracted.

“It has come to our attention that a survey link claiming to be part of Shell’s 130th anniversary is circulating online. It is a phishing scam meant to steal your personal data. Please be aware that this is not from Shell.”

On July 7, 2021, Pilipinas Shell, Philippines licensed brand, disputed the exact claim.

This promotion reportedly by Shell Company claiming to be giving cash prizes is FAKE.
