Media Workshop on Air Pollution in Nairobi, Kenya
The Internews EJN is organising a three-day workshop in Nairobi from May 8–10, 2023, to equip local journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills to report effectively on air pollution. The workshop aims to increase public awareness of the sources, impacts, and possible solutions to air pollution in Nairobi. During the workshop, the Internews EJN will provide opportunities for journalists to engage with subject experts and affected communities, giving them a better understanding of the real-life challenges posed by air pollution.
The workshop is open to Kenyan journalists based in Nairobi County, working in print, online, radio, and television media outlets. To be eligible, applicants must commit to attending all three days of the workshop, have some experience reporting on scientific and/or environmental topics, be able to communicate effectively in English, demonstrate an interest in air quality issues, and permit the organisers to republish any stories produced as a result of their participation in the workshop.

Story Grants to Report on the Mediterranean Sea
The Mediterranean Media Initiative, launched in March 2022, aims to increase public awareness about the Mediterranean Sea’s overfishing and biodiversity crisis. The initiative offers journalists up to €1,000 ($1,070) in grant money to report on topics such as marine protected areas, biodiversity loss, and destructive fishing practices. The grants will be awarded at the end of April 2023, with the expectation that all stories will be published by July 15, 2023, at the latest. The initiative seeks to support journalists from any country bordering the Mediterranean Sea and accepts applications in English or French.

2023 Documentary Fund Grant Application
The Sundance Institute Documentary Fund accepts applications for funding from independent nonfiction filmmakers with budgets under $1 million. They prioritise supporting historically underrepresented communities and artists from Africa, China, India, Latin America, and the Middle East. Applicants may apply at any production phase and submit a written proposal, proposal checklist, line-item budget, and visual samples. The application deadline is April 17, 2023, and filmmakers will be notified of the status of their application by fall/winter 2023.
The Sundance Institute Documentary Fund committee evaluates selected submissions based on several criteria, including artful film language, engaging storytelling, originality, feasibility, contemporary cultural relevance, journalistic rigour, and potential to connect with its intended audience. Award decisions typically take six months. Applicants should not contact the organisation to inquire about their status.

Hammarskjöld Journalism Fellowship
Applications are being accepted by the Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists from journalists with a career in print, television, radio, or internet journalism, primarily from developing nations in Africa, Asia (including Pacific Island nations), and Latin America/the Caribbean. They will cover the 78th United Nations General Assembly’s discussions for approximately ten weeks. The Fund invites full-time and freelance journalists to apply, provided they are strongly interested in international affairs and the United Nations and its member agencies work.

JournalismAI Fellowship Programme
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has launched the JournalismAI Fellowship Programme, which brings together up to 30 journalists and technologists from media organisations worldwide to explore innovative solutions to improve journalism using AI technologies. The programme runs from June to December and is designed so that fellows can keep their jobs while dedicating eight hours a week to the Fellowship.
Fellows are paired with a colleague from their organisation, one with an editorial/strategic role and the other with a technical role, and then matched with another pair from a different organisation to form a team. Teams choose a project to work on and receive financial support for project expenses, mentorship, and coaching from experts in the JournalismAI community.
The programme aims to advance fellows’ AI expertise, benefit their professional development, and enable their organisations to accelerate AI adoption and implementation. The programme is participant-driven, with teams organising and developing their work independently with guidance from the JournalismAI team and regular check-ins with the rest of the cohort. Applicants must be pairs of journalists and technologists with experience working on products and/or stories that involve the use of AI technologies.
