Wander is group chat for strangers.

We all start as strangers. We choose what happens next.

Wander is a social messaging app that lets strangers in the same city, who share the same interests, text as a group.

We think you could really love Wander. Everyone needs an outlet. To be understood, to share, and to talk and laugh with friends old and new.

We just launched on iOS, and since we love communities, help us keep making Wander better!

Here’s what you can look forward to.

Instant, Live Forums and Topic Threads

It’s pretty amazing to get instant replies instead of posting in a forum or on Facebook and waiting for someone to see it.

We believe that people have many sides — that’s what make them beautiful and unique. The time of being pigeonholed is over.

So our broad range of categories and community-driven topics allow you to discuss the multiple things that matter to your heart’s content. The difference is that you can discuss it live, with people who care. No more useless anonymous troll responses. And no more waiting.

No Posting, Just Messaging

We’re so used to messaging these days. We message colleagues, family, and even dates we haven’t met. Messaging should also let us build new connections with people who like the same stuff as we do.

Chatting about something we all care about helps us build stronger relationships with strangers and gives us the answers, feedback or listening ear we need, when we need it.

Knowing someone else on the other side is typing at the same time, in response to you, makes conversations more engaging — these real connections are what we think can play a very big, positive role in your day.

Tailored for People

As a team, we make thousands of decisions in the process of building Wander. The one thing that drives our decisions is always people. How would someone feel, what would they think, and how do we delight them?

We think of how people communicate in person, and how to bring that humanity back into digital interaction. Since group messaging is about managing multiple trains of thought and different personalities, we designed Wander to bring out the best in groups of people, who are just a tap away.

We’ve only just started. For example, in a chat channel, if you physically wave over your phone, this appears:

I really love this hidden feature. Knowing that the person on the other end is actually waving makes me feel a warmer, more personal connection with them. (Edit: This feature has been removed because too many accidental waves were disrupting the conversation — oops.)

There are very exciting things coming up along the same lines that we can’t wait to share with you.

A Profile You’re Proud Of

If you love games, you’ll probably have a Xbox or Playstation ID. Love books? Probably on Goodreads. And we all know foodies hang out on Yelp. We think all of these places show our different sides.

Profiles on Wander allow you to be as detailed or as sparse as you’d like. We’d like people to discover each other easily — you can even search for other people based on these fields. Looking for other INTJs like you? Just search for INTJ and you’ll see people who match that type.

I filled up my profile on Wander (@metakrystal) so that you could get to know me better! Look me up and let me know how you’d like Wander to improve, and I’ll see what I can do to make it happen.

All About Communities

Strong communities really make spaces come alive.

At Wander, we love community leaders. These aren’t necessarily the social media influencers we love for their content and trendspotting.

Who we consider community leaders are those who get people together, post helpful content, comment and engage others in the community, organise meet-ups or digital events, and are really the heart of a group. They are typically empathetic, extroverted, and love making people feel like they belong.

If you’re what I described above, I want to hear from you.

I’d like you to use Wander so your community can chat with each other live, and I’d like you to come build Wander with my team and I. We deeply respect community leaders and want to make sure Wander helps them do what they love. Your feature requests, feedback and suggestions go a long way.

It’s time to create channels, invite your community, and talk to me about your experience!
