If only words were enough to describe what our taste buds experienced our first week in Thailand. We have always heard that Thai food was amazing and despite having it readily available in the U.S. it wasn’t something that we took advantage of.

One of the primary goals of us traveling is to embody other cultures and what better place to do that but in Thailand!

OUR FIRST MEAL

Our first Thai meal was in the morning when we woke up at our hotel in Bangkok. We had no idea what to expect but honestly didn’t care because we were starving. We trekked downstairs to an open courtyard that had seating along a canal with additional tables and chairs inside of a glass enclosure. Within this “glass house” was an authentic Thai buffet with zero resemblance of what a typical Western breakfast would look like.

There was an assortment of fruits, vegetable fried rice, Thai fried chicken nibblets, toast, fresh juices and jams, as well as some small boxes of cereal.

Of course the first thing Aria says is “Mommy, where are the pancakes?”. To which I replied, “Baby, we are in another country, there are no pancakes for breakfast here.” Saddened by this news, she asked for some chicken (because I typically never let them have chicken for breakfast) and that frown turned upside really quick.

Tim and I sat in awe for about 3 minutes as we filled our plates with seemingly tasty yet recognizable foods.

One of the most interesting things we noticed about this meal is the way the eggs looked. Every single of other eggs had an orange-like colored yolk opposed to the bright yellow yolks that we are accustomed to back home.

We honestly thought something was wrong with them (although they tasted no different).

We soon learned that ALL eggs we countered looked like this because their chickens are fed an organic diet and are completely free range chickens.

Yunche’s special birthday dinner

This birthday was an extra special birthday because not only did I turn 33, but it was the first time in about 4 years that I truly got a chance to celebrate my birthday. For the last 4 years we have been very focused on the end goal and that meant sacrificing temporary things for long-lasting happiness and freedom. So this birthday dinner was super special because not only did we get a full-blown Thai experience, we got to do it at a popular spot that we saw on YouTube called Lung Ja Seafood.

You get to pick from the fresh catch of the day and they cook it right there in front of you while you are seated to witness the day turn to night in the famous Hua Hin night market.

Amazing spread

Fresh juice made to order

The wait staff was absolutely amazing. One of the waiters came over to deliver our food and even stayed to cut up our girls chicken into bite-sized portions. We ordered:

  • 2 medium-sized lobsters (grilled)
  • Seafood fried rice platter (enough for 3 people)
  • A platter of fried shrimp
  • 2 plates of grilled chicken and French fries
  • 3 fresh fruit juices
  • 1 Thai beer

And the total was a whopping 3,682 Thai Baht = $118 USD.

Talk about a steal! We would have easily paid $80 for just the lobster in the U.S.

Finding a bit home in a foreign land

One morning we were looking for a good traditional American breakfast and since Hua Hin is hot tourist destination in Thailand, we knew it would not be too hard to find. My Google search led us to a popular coffee spot called The Coffee Club. They have several locations throughout Hua Hin and perhaps more importantly FREE wifi. (Thank you internet gods).

Getting there was a challenge as we had to maneuver around tiny alleys, tight spaces and parallel only parking (Thanks for driving babe) but totally worth the headache. Each location has a luxurious, touristy feel with prices to match. You don’t come here looking for a bargain. Instead, you come for the food, drinks and A.C.

Angus Beef sourced from Australia. Tender, juicy, very low fat. Perfectly cooked.
Great on a hot day but requires a bit of a sugar. Won’t leave you feeling jittery.
Nutella fresh berry pancake stack — It tastes as good as it looks
Spanish chorizo omelet — I don’t eat pork so I picked the meat out.

Our food was everything we wanted and more. While the coffee left a bit to be desired, you could taste the difference from a traditional cup of coffee. Next to no sweetener but high-quality ingredients. If you are a minimalist coffee drinker, you will certainly enjoy their coffee.

We had some other amazing food adventures that we will cover in other blog posts particularly relating to grocery shopping in Thailand and our new favorite ice cream shop.

Until our next food adventure…
