Danna and her son in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

[Editor’s Note: We met Danna Redmond via a Founder’s Live event. Shortly after we noticed Danna plotting interesting trips via Wanderlust Society so we asked to profile her… even though she now likes sloths over llamas (blasphemy!)

Danna is co-founder HeyThrivy, another local growing startup with female founders. HeyThrivy does the errands and the urgent, so you can focus on the important. Are you in Seattle or on Mercer Island? Do yourself a favor and check them out at https://www.heythrivy.com. — Editor]

Hometown?

Seattle, WA — I’ve now lived in Seattle longer than I have anywhere else so Seattle has officially become my Hometown.

Why do you use Wanderlust Society?

Wanderlust Society is a great way to keep me organized and keep all the different possibilities in activities, sites, places to stay, places to eat and things to do on a vacation in one place and then prioritize and map them out from there for the things we will do and see.

I love getting ideas of different things that I hadn’t heard of or thought of when I am planning a trip to a new locale.

A mama sloth and her baby that we saw in Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica — I am now a huge sloth fan (sorry llama)

What trips did you take last year where you used WS?

Costa Rica — we went to Costa Rica on Spring Break this year and loved it. It was an incredible family trip with my 12 year old, my husband and another family.

What’s on your 2018 bucket list?

Our Great Americana trip that includes Boston, Plymouth, Salem, Philadelphia to learn more about Colonial America

What’s your favorite piece of luggage?

My Tumi Rollaboard — it is a work horse that I have had for over 20 years that I can pack for 10 days in and it has never needed to be repaired. I worked in a luggage store in college, learned the value of a quality piece of luggage. I also learned which brands didn’t come in for repairs often so that influenced my purchase many years ago.

My red leather passport cover — another piece I have had for a really long time, it has pockets to store my Global Entry card, travel medicine card and my passport.

What type of traveler are you?

I like to immerse myself with the locals, their culture and the local scene as much as possible.

I want my son to see and understand different cultures and different ways of life. I like to stay in apartment rentals or smaller local hotels/motels when I can. I prefer to wander around a city and find a little hole in the wall to eat or to eat from a street vendor and that has worked out in my favor most of the time.

One of my favorite travel memories is a trip to Paris with my husband, each afternoon we would stop at the little bakery down the street from our hotel and get a loaf of bread and a wedge of cheese and with due to our limited French we never knew for sure what we were getting until we got back our hotel and started eating it but it was always an adventure and usually very tasty.

Where do you find your inspiration for where to travel?

Where don’t I get inspiration from?!?

I have a running list of dozens (maybe hundreds) of cities, countries and places that I would love to go. I add more when I talk to other travelers and friends.

Best travel tip?

Just travel, don’t put it off, just travel.

In our busy lives there is always going to be something that is competing for our time or for our dollars but prioritize travel and get out there and experience the world.

Oh and go to a local grocery store and buy all sorts of local snacks and treats to try while you are there and then bring some home with you too.
