Wanderlust Society is now open to the public — a place to plan, discover and share trips. We’ve finished enough early functionality that we wanted to open up what we have complete so far. This early preview of Wanderlust includes the basics for easily saving travel ideas from the web, seeing your ideas on a map and surfing others’ ideas who are also planning trips on the site.

It all starts with a list

We think a key “gotta have” feature for any serious online travel service is the ability for people to make a trip their own. That means you can add your own ideas as opposed to picking from a list of generic picks. Since most people start their travel research on the Internet these days, Wanderlust allows users to save links (URLs) and photos they find on the web and bookmark them as ideas in a Trip list. For example, here’s a list of Iceland ideas a friend curated on his own.

Each “card” in a Trip represents a single travel idea.

See it on a map

Seeing how a travel plan is shaping up on a map is another benchmark feature for a serious travel tool. On Wanderlust, with a click of a button, you can see an interactive map showing all your saved ideas plotted over a map. The map view is especially useful when traveling out in the field for getting quick access to your ideas on the go.

Each saved idea is reprented by a single pin. Groups of pins show up with a count.

Idea discovery

We think people discover the best travel ideas from those who share similar interests and by word-of-mouth. What makes travel discovery unique on Wanderlust is all ideas are sourced from other travelers’ planning on the site. Think of it as “your travel planning helps other people’s travel planning.” For now, a preview of idea discovery can be found on the Wanderlust homepage. There users can see what other users on the site are planning for their own trips and save them to their own. There’s still lots more coming with respect to helping people find interesting ideas just for them, so stay tuned.

Discover travel ideas by viewing other people’s trip planning.

How to help

Instead of waiting for the full product we have in mind to come together, we thought it would be better to release major pieces as they come together. It forces us to get our ideas out into the real world faster and get feedback from actual travelers sooner. This first release is about providing the basics for bookmarking and mapping your own trip ideas.

You can help us out by trying Wanderlust Society to save your ideas for a future trip you’d like to take in 2018. The site is fully responsive and works well from desktop to tablet to mobile. And there is no fee to use the service during beta. We’d love to hear what you think. Please do drop us a line at: hello@wanderlustsociety.co

Happy traveling!
