Hello fellow wanderers,

This week we suggest wandering in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, inspired by Society member Jolynn. She and her husband, academics with backgrounds in literature, love travel, have a ten year old son and live in Syracuse, NY. Here are some ideas they’ve curated for their next trip to Philly:

Where to Eat?

The following is on their list of top spots to eat on their next trip:

Zahav, tops their list as a family favorite place for Israeli food. Jolynn adds the disclaimer that the Yelp review for this place says, “no” for good place for kids, but they take their son anyway.

Federal Donuts, because what family trip would be complete without a stop at the best donut shop?

Kanella Grill

London Grill for kid and adult friendly food.

Little Nonna’s because everyone likes Italian food.

Pizzeria Vetri and everyone likes pizza.

Kanella Grill for some kebabs.

Franklin Fountain for ice cream and soda, just in case you aren’t full enough yet.

Where to go with kids?

Independence Hall is a must visit to view the site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Please Touch Museum

Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse

Liberty Bell, another “must” with no explanation needed.

Bartram’s Garden, as Bartram was a really important early naturalist, according to Jolynn, the daughter of a gardening enthusiast.

Philadephia’s Magic Gardens is an impressive collection of mosaics inspired by Peruvian folk art.

Where to go if you can ditch the kids?

Grab your cocktail at Franklin Mortgage & Investment, a former front for America’s largest alcohol smuggling ring during Prohibition.

The Barnes Foundation to view one of America’s greatest art collections.

Don’t miss the Eastern State Penitentiary for the creepy weird, and historical factor.

What to read or watch before you visit?

Jolynn says everyone should read The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin by Benjamin Franklin, and watch The Philadelphia Story to properly set the mood for the trek to Philly.

The Art of the Steal, is a fascinating documentary regarding the fight over the Barnes Foundation massive art collection.

And for the kids, watch National Treasure, a family friendly DaVinci Code-esque thriller to get them in the mood to see the liberty bell. Another disclaimer from Jolynn, the academic, make sure you have your kids fact check the film after watching it! https://declaration.fas.harvard.edu/blog/facts-nationaltreasure
