Writers in Uganda have very little access to formal training in their craft. This means that most writers are pursuing writing simply from a love of it and many do not have the opportunity to have their work read by an audience outside of their immediate family, friends, and workmates.

Our Publishing House!

Quiet Garden Publishing was started to address this very issue by providing writing classes to interested writers and then giving them the opportunity to have their work published both in print and online.

Quiet Garden was started under the umbrella of Uganda Faith Writers Association (UFWA), an group of writers who came together as believers to find ways to use their talent to bring light, hope, and inspiration to readers via Christian-based writing that encompasses all genres from poetry to short stories to life-based writing for spiritual living.

@WANDIIKAMAGAZINE is the ‘baby’, so to speak, of our first group of writers who passed through both the Poetry and Storytelling classes in 2016. Maybe it was happenstance or divine intervention but these writing classes were populated mostly by women whose dedication to their craft, their willingness to learn, and their trust in God inspired this magazine.

WANDIIKA means ‘to write’…

WANDIIKA means ‘to write’ in Luganda, the local language most widely spoken in Uganda. Most African languages of BANTU origin share similarities in vocabulary which means that many languages have similar sounding words for ‘to write’. For example in Swahili, ‘to write’ is Kuandika and in Rukiga, a language spoken in the west of Uganda, ‘to write’ is Kuhandika.

It is therefore our desire to ‘write’…about our beliefs, yes, but also about our everyday lives as well as to explore our interest in the various genres of the both fiction and nonfiction.

The contributors to our magazine are a diverse group of ladies (and gents!), most of whom will be ‘unveiling’ their work to the public for the very first time!

We are planning to have different sections like Lifestyle, Fiction, Poetry, Interviews, Visual Arts etc. We are on a journey to see where God takes us. We hope you come on this journey with us and we are grateful to all our readers for your time. Please be kind as you read as we are mostly amateurs trying to do the best we can with the gifts we’ve been given!

TO BEGIN WITH…

We are addressing, in our launch stories, the idea of life-choices. This is the theme explored in our feature pieces and in the poetry too.

Our plan is to keep adding to our magazine as we write and to explore different themes along the way.
