OSPI Announces Election for State Board of Education

OLYMPIA — September 1, 2020 — The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction will conduct an election to fill a position on the State Board of Education (SBE), Western Region Position 4.

Western Region Position 4 represents Clallam, Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Skamania, Snohomish, Thurston, Wahkiakum, and Whatcom counties.

SBE candidates must be residents of the region they wish to represent. Persons elected to the Board may not concurrently serve as a member of the board of directors of either a public school district or a private school. After elected to the State Board, members cannot be employed by any public or private school, college, university, or other educational institution, any educational service district, or the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

Declaration of Candidacy forms must be filed and postmarked with OSPI by September 16, 2020.

Elected State Board of Education members serve a 4-year term and are elected by the members of local school boards within the voting region. Voting, by mail-in ballot, will take place October 1–16. The term of office for the SBE member elected in fall 2020 will begin the second Monday in January 2021.

The State Board of Education helps develop programs that prepare each student for the future. The Board provides leadership, support, and advocacy through policy to help each student achieve success in school and life. Membership on the Board requires a considerable commitment of time for preparation and attendance at several 2- or 3-day meetings throughout the year.
