‘They Came to Kill Us’

Yezidi girl fled militants in Iraq

When Islamic State militants attacked northern Iraq in late July and early August, tens of thousands of people from the Yezidi religious group ran for their lives.

I recently traveled across Turkish, Iraqi and Syrian Kurdistan to report on the Yezidis’ plight. In Duhok, Iraq, I visited a school that doubled as a refugee camp.

A 12-year-old girl named Dera showed me around and introduced me to her family. This is her story.
