Content

I am looking for rarely covered and little known stories from wars. These stories can be of anything from a first hand account of a medic on the front lines of the Civil War to an intelligence officer working in an office in London during the Crimean War. This publication is looking to focus on real people’s stories that do not get told every day.

Bonus points for finding unique and interesting accounts of lesser known wars and battles. Examples could include conflicts such as the Hundred Year War, the Crimean War, Chinese history and other similarly overlooked topics.

If you use first person accounts or quotations make sure to properly quote and source the lines used. More information on plagiarism below.

To be considered for publication all articles must strictly follow the guidelines below. Not adhering to the guidelines is grounds for automatic dismissal of the piece and being barred from future consideration if the breach is egregious or if plagiarism is detected.

Title

  • Concise, eye catching, to the point
  • Avoid clickbait for the sake of clickbait
  • Must be in proper capitalization

Subtitle

  • The subtitle should begin with “A story of ____” and finished with a relevant descriptor
  • For example, “A story of the American Revolution”
  • For example, “A story of trench warfare”
  • Keep it short and to the point

Title Image

  • Provide one high quality historical image under the title and subtitle
  • Locate relevant photos at Wiki Commons, Library of Congress or other free public domain repositories
  • Include a description and source / license info

Subheadings / Length

  • Articles are ideally 500–2000 words in length
  • Break article into multiple subsections
  • Each section should have a title, and if relevant, a corresponding historical image

Conclusion

  • Articles should include a short outro
  • I often title this section as “Aftermath” or “Legacy” but the details are up to you
  • If you heavily referenced a book, primary source or website please post a link to your sources following the conclusion

Plagiarism

  • I have a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY when it comes to plagiarism. If you are caught copying and pasting anything, from any source, without giving due credit to the original speaker or source you will be banned from writing for this publication. No exceptions.
  • DO NOT COPY AND PASTE ANYTHING UNLESS IT IS A DIRECT QUOTE
  • I run everything through a comprehensive plagiarism checker to look for overt copy and paste jobs

Submitting to be a writer or contributor

Please carefully consider this style guide. If you think you are a good fit for this publication please email me at grantpiperwriting(at)outlook.com.

The subject line should read “War Stories Submission”.

The email body should include a link to your Medium.com profile and a link to your draft. I will not publish anything that has been previously published on Medium or elsewhere. Original content only.

Once you have submitted your draft, I will review your submission and email you back. If everything checks out, I will add you as a writer.
