The story of the USS Indianapolis is a tragic one on multiple levels. It was one of the last major ships to be sank during World War II. The torpedoes that sent her to the bottom were fired on July 30th, 1945, less than two weeks from the end of hostilities. After she was hit, the US Navy did not realize that they had lost a ship for days following the incident. They thought the ship was still en rout to its destination so no rescue was organized until it was too late for many. No one realized the Indianapolis had been destroyed until a naval patrol craft chanced upon dozens of men floundering in the open sea.
