“The ramp at Auschwitz II-Birkenau in German-occupied Poland, around May 1944.”

Only one day after a Nurse whistleblower made the explosive allegations that Immigration and Customs Enforcement may have allowed the medical sterilization (hysterectomy) of several immigrant women in their custody without consent, a new study finds nearly two-thirds of American young adults are unaware of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust.

For readers, these two stories may seem separate, but history links them into one single cautionary tale that should elicit fears of repeating history.

In the early days of what eventually led to the brutal torture and murder of millions of Jews, German medical professionals performed forced sterilization procedures and experiments of patients targeted by the Nazi government. These sterilizations and human experiments are now established as crimes against humanity. They served as a stepping stone for the genocide of six million Jews as the Holocaust unfolded.

According to the former ICE nurse turned whistleblower, the detention center where she was employed had a suspicious amount of hysterectomies preformed on patients without their consent. One patient confided in her and asked for answers.

Hysterectomies are a special procedure that fully removes one’s uterus, medically and irreversibly sterilizing a patient. The whistleblower–and lawyers involved–allege detainees would talk about a gynecologist dubbed “the uterus collector.

The United States is now facing serious and credible accusations that detained immigrants in government care are undergoing the same forced sterilization procedures which were a cornerstone of the Holocaust massacre.

Only a day after this bombshell revelation, this new study reveals nearly two-thirds of young adults aged 18–39 are unaware of the six million Jewish deaths during the Holocaust. Half of the participants could not name a single concentration camp or ghetto from the second World War.

If two-thirds of American young people are unaware of the true devastation brought by Nazism, how will they recognize when the United States itself follows down such a demonic path?

These news stories can be an opportunity for us to band together for change and motivate each other to inject more empathy and compassion into the psyche of this country.

I write this with complete seriousness: As a young American nursing student, I am genuinely concerned that our country is on a collision course with dark forces of hatred that will cause irreparable damage and human travesty. We may be on the brink of unimaginable tragedy if we continue to let the current administration reign for a second, unchecked term of power.

American ignorance of the Holocaust–as demonstrated by this newly released study–very clearly shows that our education system has utterly failed at equipping the nation with knowledge of our collective past humanitarian failures in an effort to prevent history from repeating itself once more.

Moments like this, when we learn the government may be actively approving the medical sterilization of immigrants, are the kinds of times that people will point back to in 10, 20, 30 years. Future generations will ask where you were and what you did.

As humans who inherited a world where hate has triumphed in horrific ways, it is incumbent on all of us to blare the warning sirens of fascism whenever we inch closer to repeating such history. These news stories can be an opportunity for us to band together for change and motivate each other to inject more empathy and compassion into the psyche of this country.

I am genuinely concerned that our country is on a collision course with dark forces of hatred that will cause irreparable damage and human travesty.

With less than 50 days till the Presidential election, voters are asking themselves what our country could look like if we allow a leader who cozies up to dictators, amplifies division for political gain, threatens insurrection, and oversees the sterilization of immigrants will do with 4 more years of power. Let this be a warning.
