Kernal Roberts — Wine Out Yuh Rum.

Its his third consecutive year as a Solo artiste making a transition from drummer to a seasoned Solo artiste. Kitch, as we would refer to him started his chapter as a solo artiste in 2015 with ‘Soca State Of Mind’, in 2016 he gave us ‘Legacy’ and now here he is in 2017 with his first contribution ‘Wine Out Yuh Rum’.

From my first listen i knew this song would have done well. It wasn’t the typical predictable slow groovy songs that we have been getting for the last three years that i think i am so over to be quite honest. This year i wanted artiste to come out of a comfort zone and take a risk. This song in particular set the bar high and started the ‘wildness’ from early for me.

I liked the tempo of the song it wasn’t too fast, nor was it slow, it was right in the middle of a groovy soca and a power soca which some may call a ‘Power Groove’ me personally i call it ‘Groovy Bacchanal’.

Although this song is a typical rum song however, we were still able to get a story line that meshed with some melody. Immediately when this song started Kernal was able to go right into the verse which built us up for a repetitive but explosive chorus ‘wine out yuh rum’.
There are two parts of this song which I thought were really impressive. There were some melodic arrangements which were the pre chorus… …..’carry yuh gal to the party, she want to drink like she crazy, soon as the liquor hit she, she want to go home already, that can’t wuk with me no, you can’t spoil the lime so, when yuh drink yuh alco, gal i’ll let you know to wine out yuh rum’ talk about melody.

When i thought it was done in comes ‘woii…ah looking for all the gal who could hold they Hennessy, woii…ah want to see all the gal who does drink out they Jonny…woii, Ciroc is preferred choice for the flavored vodka…woii, they love gal who drink rum and doh complain after’……….hear nah man, hear nah man, hear nah man, talk about lyrics.
When last you heard a rum song with lyrics and melody? Give Jack his jacket and Jim his Jim boots this song was well put together. That verse had melody and lav way all in one.

What some people failed to remember about Kitch, before being a drummer or artiste Kernal Roberts was a writer with countless hits under his belt. Its in his veins, and its a gift not given to many…… and yes we all go through things that sometimes separates us from our passion but i am glad that he is back on track a giving us songs to really enjoy the mas. This is the kind of song you want to hear in the ‘jiggy hours’ of the party/fete when the liquor starts to soak in and you have no choice but to wine it out.

For me from the start of his solo career his music started off as good but got better each year. Its a battle that every artiste goes through because each year you have to be as good as your last hit or better and i think Kernal is mastering that art. I cannot wait for what he has in store for the rest of the season. If this is just the start of what he has to come well, we are well on our way to having a carnival to talk about.
