Starting next season, NHL players will no longer wear themed warmup jerseys, including rainbow jerseys for Pride Nights. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed that these specialty jerseys have become a distraction and want to focus on honoring various groups or causes without distractions.

While the decision was made during Pride Month, Bettman acknowledged the concern but emphasized that the focus should be on the game and the causes being supported. NHL teams will continue to host Pride Nights, and specialty jerseys will still be available for purchase, but they will not be worn on the ice. This decision comes after some players declined to wear Pride-themed gear during warmups, citing reasons such as religion or opposition to anti-gay laws.

By removing the choice altogether, the NHL aims to avoid tension and controversy surrounding player participation. Other sports, like baseball, have also faced discord regarding LGBT-themed celebrations. Despite the controversy, most MLB teams still plan to host Pride Nights, and it is likely that the majority of NHL teams will do the same next season, albeit without the players wearing rainbow warmup jerseys.
