RRA Journeys to the North-West
RRA consultants Scott Prior, John Weate travelled with RRA’s Manager Sarah Chisholm to Kununurra last week to meet with staff from East Kimberley Job Pathways (EKJP) and The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley Council.
The EKJP provides employment services to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the region, and in the words of our RRA team the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley Council run “a beautiful landfill” in Kununurra. EKJP facilitate individual and community access to a range of options, with their ultimate goal being to end passive welfare — They want to support those in the community who can work or contribute to community life.

Our visit was to identify and assess opportunities for training and employment in waste management and resource recovery for local job seekers. Our motto is ‘Transferring Knowledge, Transforming Waste’, so you could say that this initial visit was to also listen and learn. Remote Australia often involves unique considerations in terms of population size, transport and climate. Local champions, knowledge and context are key when we visit remote communities.

The two landfills visited by RRA are currently operated by Council staff, and they do a great job. A number of significant improvements have been implemented over the last 3 years, and RRA hopes to continue work with EKJP and The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley Council to optimise and improve recovery, re-use and re-processing of materials, and to maximise local job creation and training.
Many thanks to John Gault from The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley Council for a great tour of your facilities.
And keep up the great work East Kimberly Job Pathways!
We are passionate about our work in transforming waste and empowering people through employment opportunity. We strongly believe that what began in Tuncurry all those years ago is a model that can be replicated across the country, increasing resource recovery and opportunity of people.
