So, it’s been a while, huh?

I’ve been going back and forth on different projects to do since we put the show formerly known as Watch, Read, Listen on more-or-less permanent hiatus. I’m sure some of those will eventually be things, but this is the one that is actually a thing: Catch the Wizard.

While much of the content will be related directly to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, it’s not just a Tolkien project. Rather, it is centered around Tolkien’s idea of secondary creation, the idea that we live in the primary world and that creator’s make secondary worlds using the building blocks of the primary. Tolkien was, of course, approaching this from a theistic world-view (as do I), but it is not limited to any religious or spiritual tradition; all creators participate in this secondary creation, whether it be through books, movies, music, photography, or any other artistic endeavor.

These creations, when done with the best skill, inspire secondary belief. Tolkien used this in contrast to the idea of the suspension of disbelief. One has only to consider the way fans of worlds like Star Wars, Marvel Comics, Harry Potter, etc. talk about these worlds as if they were real to see secondary belief at work. In an important sense, these worlds are real; they exist within the imagination in much the same way anything that we’re not looking at right now exists for us.

So, that’s the focus of Catch the Wizard: looking for the magic in the primary and secondary worlds. I’ll come back to this topic later, as I think it’s so important for understanding what all of this is good for, but that’s it for now.

I’ll be posting episodes of Catch the Wizard to the WRL podcast feed as I’m starting out, before transitioning fully to the new CTW feed. I hope that you’ll join me there. Thanks for reading!
