Nostalgia

Looking back, looking forward and embracing this second that is the present.

Nostalgia is considered to be a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time.

I was born on the eve of the 90s.

With every eve of a new decade, warm waves of nostalgia wash over me.

They say we shouldn’t look back. But i strain my neck forward with one eye on the past and one eye on the present.

I find myself at the same place…missing the decades, browsing at mental pictures from afar.

The pictures of the 90s are warm pastel tones.

The 90s reared me, cajoled me and fed my many childish whims.

On the eve of 2020, I find myself yearning for those indulgent tween years.

But i am an oxymoron. I have never been more excited to shed the skin of a decade. The promises of the 20s excite me, but the memories of the 90s call back to me.

When your t shirt had to match your hair clip. And you had time to gather daisies like the ones on said t shirt.

We used to climb atop a mulberry tree and feast. Forgetting that supper was a few hours away and we would ruin our appetite for dinner.

We are the millennial generation, the era of “adulting” when it is perfectly fine to order dessert before dinner.

And perfectly normal to spend your life savings on gourmet “smashed avo” on toast.

This community is very blessed to have a variety of age groups. But fortunately, or unfortunately, you’re going to hear a whole lot about the nostalgic 90s. Because i am reluctantly the adult in charge and “i said so”.

I get to use as many typos, poorly framed composition and 90s metaphors that i can squeeze into each blog post.

This blog feels like my pink and fluffy 90's locked journal.

And i am lending you the key to my haphazard thoughts.

In the almost two years since the inception of Watercolour Cape Town, we have had many incredible creatives who have inspired and enlightened us on our path.

I will be uploading interviews with a handful of these talented creatives who have illuminated our path.

Everybody is on their own unique artistic path.

I want this blog to inspire people from every part of the world.

If you are a professional, a beginner, a hobbyist… i hope that in some small way, you will find inspiration from the interviewees.

Somebody who will read this, think about it and maybe in 2023 decide to pick up a paint brush (that is me, my 5 year plan says i need to understand videography by 2021… which is optimistic considering i have never EVER filmed anything before)

If there are any copywriters, artists, or curious creatives who would be willing to donate their time to this cause in exchange for postcards of butterflies or unicorns. Hit me up in the comments section.

Thank you for taking the time to read till the end, i have heard that over 4 million blog posts are published every single day.

I really do appreciate that you chose to spend 5 minutes of your day with Watercolour Cape Town

much love

xxooxx
