The longest serving African American Congressman, fighter for reparations, and co-founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus died October 27th, 2019 at the age of 90 years old. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1964 and served Detroit until he was forced to resign December 5th, 2017. He introduced a bill to establish Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday as a national holiday which passed the House in 1983. His wife, Coretta Scott King chaired the commission responsible for creating the first celebration of King’s birthday in 1986. John Conyers, Jr. fought against redistricting by Michigan Republicans, red-lining, voter suppression, and Emergency Management laws which helped cause the Flint Water Crises. He served my community with respect and love. Homegoing service will be held at Greater Grace Temple Church Monday, November 4th, 2019 at 11 a.m. John Conyers, Jr. was a black man who fought for equality for black people in Detroit and that’s what I call Black Power!

John Conyers, Jr. speaks up against Flint Water Crises and racist Emergency Management Policy.

“Emergency Managers have run cities with large African-American populations, such as Highland Park (94 percent), Benton Harbor (89 percent), Detroit (83 percent), Flint (56 percent), Pontiac (52 percent), and Ecorse (46 percent). Benton Harbor, which has been operating under an EM since 2010, saw its voter-participation rate decline by more than half.”-John Conyers, Jr.

JUSTICE

That Justice is a blind goddess
Is a thing to which we black are wise:
Her bandage hides two festering sores
That once perhaps were eyes. -Langston Hughes
