The mission of the Detroit Doll Show is to celebrate history, culture, self love, and diversity with the promotion of black dolls.

Teaching children the importance of self-love is one of the first lessons that should be taught to children. The Detroit Doll Show exposes children to beautiful dolls that look just like them. During the 1940’s psychologist Dr. Kenneth and Mamie Clark conducted a “doll study” where children identified black dolls as bad and ugly. A labeling that is consistently perpetuated within today’s news media, advertisement, schools, and judicial system. When black children are taught early about their culture, with positive reinforcement from their community, a healthy self-esteem is fostered and creates a strong knowledge-of-self.

Artist and Author Sandra L. Epps created The Detroit Doll Show to empower young people. Her motto is “Love the Skin You’re In” and “Image is Everything” because it’s healthy for a child’s self esteem to play with a doll that reflects their image and empowering for collectors. Sandra L. Epps is also the creator of Sandy’s Land Parties & events, Dolled Up Pillows, Healthy Kid Program, and I Can Do That Program. Her latest books “Imani Has The Most Exciting Dream!” and “Girl Power” are beautifully illustrated books that include tools to increase the self-esteem in children.
