Our writing date, me and Madeline, was supposed to happen at 8AM. I stayed up late last night scrolling Facebook and reading books I didn’t need for writing or for research. I got up at 8:02, checked my phone. She texted at 7:51, said she was leaving in 5 minutes. I put on a bra and a belt. Muzzy was sound asleep on the couch, curling up in a donut shape in his teal blanket. 30 seconds later, I heard Madeline’s footsteps up the stairs. Muzzy startled and ran off into the laundry room. I peeped my head out, my face unwashed and hair unbrushed. Madeline laughed “You are adorable.”

I made latte with regular whole milk for her — she found some scientific evidence that whole milk keeps you leaner, it fills you up early in the day so you don’t graze as much — and with lactose-free whole milk for me. Adam was up, too, trying to change without being seen. I made him his regular black coffee, no sugar, no milk, just plain black coffee, the color of my eyes.

We finally sat down at the new dining table at 8:45. It’s an IKEA LEGO, bare pine, with two chairs. I bought some flower from Walmart the night before and put them in a vase. Muzzy did not knock it off.

It’s a chilly day for May, about 60 degree outside, sunny, not too windy. Inside, Madeline asked for a blanket and/or socks. Adam pulled out a king size quilt we put away since the end of winter when we didn’t need triple layers of cover anymore. I got her socks. Muzzy came out and checked on her. She had been here before, he had been at her house when we were out of town for a long trip. Yet, everytime she’s here, he forgets who she is and has to warm up again. It’s like 50 first dates for them.

We started pretending to write. Madeline worked on her dissertation — she wants to graduate from graduate school in July, then from bachelorette life in October. Adam worked on his blog post for next week. I had a writing contest in mind and I wanted to write our first trip to Vietnam. Back to Vietnam for me, just to Vietnam for him. I think it will be fun.
