If you aren’t one Instagram’s 600 million active users, you may only know Instagram as a photo sharing app with filters that make your selfies look better than they actually are.

In case you haven’t been keeping up, Instagram is so much more and is one of the most popular places to share videos & promote content. Depending on your target audience, it could be one of the most effective social channels to connect with your target podcast or blog audience.

“What a second… Instagram doesn’t support audio posts or embed players! Not to mention, I can’t post from my computer (where I keep all of my audio).”

^ That is true. However, it isn’t difficult to post audio content to Instagram while on your desktop. It just takes a few extra steps (that could be very worthwhile).

We started our Instagram (@getwavve) a little over two months ago and have only posted video clips which include audio content, an image, animation, and text description. While our following & stats pale in comparison to other accounts, we have built a targeted & engaged audience in a short amount of time. If your content focuses on fashion, cooking, fitness, health, or similar lifestyle topics, Instagram may be a great channel for your social activity. At the least, it’s worth testing.

Here is a sample of what our tool, Wavve, creates which you can share directly to Instagram (FYI — Access to Wavve is not required for this walk-through):

Many podcasters, radio shows, and other audio content creators aren’t utilizing Instagram to share their content because it isn’t intuitive. If you think your target audience is on Instagram, this means you have a great opportunity to stand out from the crowd. Let’s show you how!

How To Do it:

Most importantly, Instagram requires that your posts be in either image or video format. Obviously, video format will be the ideal choice to get your audio content on Instagram.

To create a video that features your audio, we simple need three things:

  1. An image
  2. An audio clip
  3. Video production tool

Step 1: Get an image ready

If you don’t have a go-to application for easily creating custom images, sign up for a free Canva account. Do it now. Seriously.

Canva makes it incredibly easy to create custom images via a drag & drop interface. If you are a pro at creating images, skip to the next step. If not, here is a quick Youtube video tutorial that explains how it works:

Step 2) Use a video production tool to create a video by combining your audio clip and image

There are plenty of free tools that you can use to create videos. iMovie (Mac users), Windows Movie Maker (Windows), Keynote, etc. You may already have access to a video production software on your computer. If you have the tools, skills, and know-how to get it done, go for it!

If you don’t have the time or access to the tools, Wavve makes it easily to turn audio into custom-branded, animated MP4 files. Wavve allows you to setup and save a custom designed video card template that you can use to quickly create videos on-demand. Here is how it works:

Step 3) Post to Instagram

One last hurdle! Instagram currently only allows you to post via their smartphone app. Luckily, there are a few third party services you can use to post to Instagram from your desktop. We wrote a handy guide which you can check out here 👇

Buffer: The Wavve Team uses Buffer to post Wavve videos to Instagram, and it works beautifully. Buffer is an online tool that helps you manage scheduled posts to Facebook, Instagram, etc., It is an amazing tool but for this article’s purposes, it will allow you to post videos directly to Instagram (for free).

Buffer for Mobile & Web

Thanks to Instagram’s posting rules, Buffer sends you a push notification to your mobile device which allows you to start the Instagram posting process. This Buffer page better explains how the process works.

Gramblr: Gramblr is a Windows & Mac application that makes it easy to post videos to your Instagram account (it’s free). If you prefer downloading an application, this works well!

Not satisfied with either of those tools? Check out this article which includes a few paid/premium options:

Make it this far!? Nicely done!

There is always one unhappy camper, right?

Once you have the process down, it doesn’t take much time at all to get your audio content to Instagram! If you were able to successfully follow the guide and post audio to Instagram, be sure to tag us: @getwavve.
