From Beginner to Published: My First Month Writing on Medium
Discover my earnings and reach after one month of writing on Medium
March 27th was the start of an exciting adventure for me as I joined Medium. One month later, I want to share the lessons I’ve learned and the money I earned along the way.
I had no set expectations or specific plans initially, I just wanted to get started to express myself and explore the possibilities of Medium as a platform.
Since those beginnings, I have been surprised by how much joy it brought me to share my ideas and connect with others. Learning from the ideas and insights of the community, and receiving constructive feedback has helped me to improve my writing.
The Numbers
In the past month, I have written 15 articles on Medium and I am grateful for the positive response I’ve received. This includes 1,893 views, 887 reads, 311 new followers, and even two email subscribers.
After 10 days, I gained enough followers to join the Medium Partner Program so I could also earn (a little bit) of money by writing on Medium. I didn’t have high expectations for my first month so it was a total surprise that my total earnings amounted to $10.81.
The first success was after I posted “A Beginner’s Guide to Notion: How to Get Started with Your Productivity Journey” on April 9th. This article helped me to get the most overall views on the day after. Also, the article itself skyrocketed (at least if I compare it to the days before). Since posting that article my average views were at 95 views per day.
Another achievement in the first month was that out of the 15 articles, two were published via a publication (maybe three I don’t know if this article will make it). I think that this has also helped me that more people looked at my articles.
The big surprise for me was that from the $10.81 just three articles made $9,95. That means just three articles made 92% of the total earnings!
The three most successful articles were:
- Looking for a Notion Alternative? Here Are 4 Great Options ($7,44)
- A Beginner’s Guide to Notion: How to Get Started with Your Productivity Journey ($1,60)
- Organize Your Life With These 7 Free Notion Templates ($0,91)
While I've enjoyed writing about a variety of topics, including travel, productivity, self-improvement, AI, my DIY camper build, and finance, it's been my posts on Notion that have really taken off with readers.
What does that mean for me, will I write more on Notion?
Maybe.
I have written other articles on Notion and they have not been that successful and to be honest I cannot say how they are different. So I will just continue to write about the topics that interest me and hopefully find my niche in the future.
Overall I think it is also a little bit of luck how successful you are for the first months on Medium. If you put in the work, rework the headlines, write about topics that excite you, read a lot of stories of other writers, and check the grammar you will improve. And if you’ll improve the stats will follow. This is at least what I hope for the future.
