Is Medium The New Tiktok?

Is Medium the new TikTok? If I am to answer this question, I will say, Medium is to writers as Tiktok is to creators. Better still the question should be; is Medium the new WordPress?

Some years ago, writers evolved in multitide, opening WordPress websites to write and create a community. It was the good old days — Many had ‘wordpress.org’ websites while others had ‘.wordpress.com’. The latter “almost” do not earn from their website and so it is to date.

These days, writers simply open a Medium account. Why? It is another evolution in writing. Medium is a social media platform for writers and editors just like Instagram is for influencers and vloggers. Does it mean writers don’t do other social platforms? No, they do so many others, Medium just helps us achieve our goals and make money from the craft and passion — of writing.

Why do I liken Medium to Tiktok? They are very similar in many ways. Creator’s run to Tiktok because it is easy - you make friends, create content and earn from it. Medium does the exact same thing for writers but even better. On Medium, you get to network, get a Job, be a part of a community and learn from diverse resources. oh! you can also earn by joining the partner program. It is simply a hassle-free way of enjoying and benefitting from writing but not without putting in the work.

To make it more fun, there are publication forums that provide new and pro-writers with the opportunity to write for a larger audience, be seen, and grow. What is a writer without his or her work and an audience? The answer is right there — .

So is Medium the new Tiktok?

No! Medium is simply the blooming writer’s hub connecting creatives with diverse opportunities. It is the micro-blogging app of the moment ( and hopefully the century because I love it) and where every writer and storyteller should be!

Is It Medium Vs WordPress? Will It Make Blogging Fall?

Again I will say, the question should be, ‘will Medium kill blogging?’ the answer is No! In as much as blogging ( not microblogging on Medium and others) is not the rave of the moment, it is unarguably true that the art of blogging is here to stay. If good old Facebook, enticing Instagram, and trending Tiktok couldn’t halt blogging then Medium still won’t. Why? blogging is the only individually owned means for any creator. It is the creator’s ( writer or blogger’s) property — Just like a home you bought, it is yours.

On the other hand, Medium and other platforms are just properties of the owners. The creatives (writers and bloggers) simply lease a space or more on these platforms. If Medium brings up rules that writers cannot meet or maybe it stops being the rave of the moment do the writers have a say over it? No.

However, if your blog is down you have a say to bring it back up. If your website traffic is poor, you work on it. You own your blog but you do not own social media platforms like TikTok, Medium, and all — unless you want to musk it (i.e buy it like Elon Musk did Twitter— pun intended).

Should writers not invest on Medium?

We should! this is our very own writer-centric platform. So many people who haven’t earned from writing before are doing so on Medium. Bloggers who haven’t earned from their blogs are making money on Medium. Story tellers are getting visibility.

This proves that Medium is here for you as a writer, storyteller, and blogger — it is your Medium. So, invest in it by;

How Can Writers Benefit And Make Money From Medium?

As a writer or storyteller, you can gain visibility and make money from Medium by doing the following;

  • Publish quality content — When it comes to writing, quality brings quantity. This rule works everywhere — even on Medium. So write quality content and publish them. Soon, people will read, give you claps, comment, highlight, and follow you. Write on topics you love, share information, and just be you.
  • Network— Networking has always been a writer’s tool, so use it for your growth. How? Read contents you love — Give a clap, comment sincerely, and yes! add them to your list. Also, follow the authors and read other content of theirs. In no time you will likely get follow backs and comments.
  • Grow Your Audience through publications — There are hundreds and thousands of publications on Medium. Most publications like ‘A Smiling World’ are consistently recruiting new writers to join them. These publications will give you visibility as a New writer, likewise, they will help you grow. Join publications that align with your writing goals and personality. Write! and Grow!
  • Understand Medium’s Algorithm and ace it! — Like Google and other search engines, Medium has an algorithm. To excel here, you have to write contents that follow their guidelines. I am new here and still ‘figuring’ out the algorithm and what works. However, these tips shared by Veronica Llorca-Smith 💎 are result-yielding and on point.

The TIPS!

Use titles and subtitles properly.

Add caps to highlight sentences in the body (like I did here).

Avoid long paragraphs. Use space and give visual breaks

Use ALT and photo credit.

Use Hyperlinks correctly.

  • Become a Partner — When you hit 100 followers on Medium, you can join the partner program and make money from your content. So becoming a partner alongside gaining visibility should be part of your goals. However, not all locations are eligible for the partner’s program.
  • Get a Job! — Anyone can get a job on Medium. Simply shine bright and put the words out there.

So?…

I conclude by saying;

Tiktok is the creators (Vloggers) platform

Twitter is the ‘ranter’s’ platform — oops! 😉😊

Instagram is the influencer’s platform

Medium is the writer’s platform.

P.S — Responding is to Medium as Commenting is to WordPress 😊
