Don’t Sweat the Seattle Squeeze, Waze Has Your Back

Avoid Alaska Way Viaduct traffic with Waze Carpool — all rides just $2!

Downtown Seattle

The shutdown of Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct, aka the “Seattle Squeeze” has officially begun. King County residents are bracing for an influx of extra congestion as traffic that would normally pass through the 2-mile-long tunnel is redistributed to downtown roads. But don’t worry, Seattleites: the Waze Community is here to help get you where you need to go. We’ve teamed up with the City of Seattle and King County Metro to offer $2 rides for all Waze Carpool rides starting or ending in King County.

While some estimates predict a 50% increase in commute times around Seattle, we know that when Wazers come together, nothing can slow us down. Back in 2011, when Los Angeles shut down 14 miles of the interstate 405 (remember Carmageddon?), Wazers persevered. And now we’re back at it, taking cars off the road and doing our part to reduce traffic with Waze Carpool.

Waze Carpool makes it easy and fun for Wazers to commute together. Tap into your local Waze Community to see drivers and riders going your way, and choose the people you want to carpool with based on detailed profiles, star ratings, and connections like same workplace and mutual friends. By making the most of drives happening anyway, we can reduce traffic, save time, money, and the environment.

During our $2 ride promotion, Waze Carpool drivers will continue to receive reimbursement for driving expenses. Carpoolers can also take advantage of King County Metro’s Just One Trip program, which includes a guaranteed ride home (plus a $25 reward from the county!).

Before you hit the road, tune into KOMO News. Their traffic forecasts are powered by Waze data and provide you with the most up-to-the minute info on roadway conditions — including the Viaduct-related road closures we have added to the Waze Map.

Here’s to getting through the Seattle Squeeze, together.
