Hiring software developers? Here’s 3 things to make your life easier.
I’m a mobile software engineer who has worked as a tech hiring manager for large and small companies. After running through the recruiting experience over and over on both sides, I saw there was something missing; so my partner Jim Wild and I created Academy — a company which matches great developers with jobs at great companies (specialising in mobile !📱😀). Our whole team consists of software developers who still write code.

Whenever Jim and I were hiring for technical roles as managers, we felt if recruiters could help us out in a few common areas, everyone’s lives would be made much easier. So, we decided to make a company which fills in those gaps. Here are the 3 things we’re bringing to the tech recruitment process:
Knowing how the tech in a company works
As a hiring manager you’re working with a business which runs on tech. Maybe you make native iOS apps which are used by millions of people a day. Guess what? That s*&t is complex! At Academy we know how apps are built and what kind of developer you actually need for your business. We know about your stack. We’re plugged in to how this stuff works so we’ll only send you candidates who are good for you — so you don’t waste any of your precious time.
We have been hiring managers in large (and small 😀) tech companies
A recruiter is suggesting people to be hired into your tech business. How great would it be if they have actually been part of the hiring process before? They could actually take a fair assessment about who would make it through your interviews (again, to save you time). At Academy our team have marked technical tests (and written many of them too); we’ve interviewed hundreds of candidates for mobile, backend and UX roles. We act as a first line of defence in your hiring so you only get the right people for your role.
A fee structure to align with your interests as a client
When we were hiring developers into permanent roles at tech companies, we wanted to have them remain as part of our team for the long term — we didn’t want them to leave after 90 days! At Academy we’ve set up a fee structure which helps you ensure you get the right people for your team for the right period of time. We’re obsessed with getting the right people into a role, rather than placement fees.
So, you have a problem with recruiters?
Heck no! We set out on this journey because we felt we could make the whole experience better. We‘ve even teamed up with a number of other recruiters to help them better vet their candidates and assist with making better matches to roles.
(And we should point out here that we’ve been helped by some fantastic recruiters to fill roles in the past and they have helped us find jobs when we were looking).
