Harvey reminds all of us we came with nothing, and may leave with nothing at any time. It is not in our control, modern deceptions to the contrary. How then shall we live? In an example of great tragedy producing a great good, a Harvey victim provides a role mode at age one and a half.

Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” Mark 10:16

This child clung to mom through raging waters, not knowing anything except trust. She had torrents around her. She was not in control. But she hung on. She was clinging to mom with everything she had when, just before she’d have gone under a trestle and become unreachable, she was rescued. That is how we are asked to cling to God.

God in Jesus died to save us, just as that mom drowned trying to get her child to higher ground, becoming a hero in her sacrifice. Salvation comes at a cost for all of us. Honor it by clinging to God.

You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name. Deuteronomy 10:20 (NASB)

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Romans 12:9 (NASB)

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Deuteronomy 6:5 (NASB)

We can all pray for this Harvey victim, and for the others, and for God to bring this suffering to end, turning it to great good, for His glory.

Having lived through Sandy, I know first hand the Red Cross was there early and helped in practical ways. I expect the same is true for Harvey. We can all text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief.
