How Hearken’s Co-founder Created A World-wide Dance Party
Welcome to a post in our new series: Community Deep Dives. Hearken knows that engagement and community growth are topics that apply to everything in life, including work. So we’re gathering community-builders to share the lessons they’ve learned that we can all take inspiration from. ICYMI our first Community Deep Dive was about Dance Dance Party Party led by Jenn Brandel.
What’s Dance Dance Party Party? It’s a womxn-only freestyle dance session that has spread all over this great Earth with chapters in dozens of countries. How does it work? Womxn of all ages enter a dark room with a bunch of strangers, dance their asses off to an eclectic mix of dance songs, and leave as friends, refreshed. It’s like reliving that late-night dance party from a sleep-over party you had when you were 10. It also just so happens to be incredible exercise that you don’t even realize you’re doing.
Below is a quick compilation of some of the knowledge Jenn shared. More where that came from at the end of this piece!
How did the community you’re focused on serving begin?
How can you extend the invitation to the people you’d like to attract to your community? How can you share the power of building and deciding and allow others to co-create something with you?
Focus on the vibe. This is key as we all experiment with more virtual engagements and the Zoom room can get stale very quickly. One tip: Set the context of what you want your audience to feel like. For example: “This is the part of the call where you are grabbing a cup of coffee and mingling with some new people.”
We’ve recorded the video here of the presentation and shared the presentation here with you in case you want to dig deeper and learn more about how DDPP started and continues to thrive!
We had a co-creative element through making a group playlist on our call with all our favorite dance songs. You’re invited to add yours, too!
