Manchester textiles study visit
On Sunday 13 November OCA tutor and programme leader Rebecca Fairley will host a study visit to two venues in Manchester.
In the morning the group will visit The Whitworth then move onto Manchester Art Gallery for the afternoon. The day will be full of gorgeous textiles from stylish mid century fabrics to cutting edge fashion.
Revolutionary Textiles 1910–1939, The Whitworth, Oxford Road Manchester
In the early decades of the 20th century textile design took off in new directions throughout the Western world. Invigorated by experimental techniques, art styles such as Fauvism, man-made fibres, and the Ballets Russes, this outburst of creativity took place against a backdrop of political ferment. Among the works featured in this exhibition are fabric lengths, garments and samples designed or produced by the Omega Workshops, Paul Poiret, Raoul Dufy, Barron and Larcher, Cryséde, Josef Hillerbrand, Ruth Reeves, Marion Dorn, and Bauhaus-trained Otti Berger.
Fashion & Freedom, Manchester Art Gallery, Mosley Street, Manchester
The exhibition sees leading female fashion designers explore the profound effect the First World War had on women. It features contemporary pieces by Vivienne Westwood, Roksanda, Holly Fulton, Emilia Wickstead, J JS Lee and Sadie Williams. Fashion & Freedom is part of 14–18 NOW, a five-year programme of extraordinary arts experiences connecting people with the First World War.
This should be a day packed full of exciting textiles providing you with the opportunity to look at the work with fellow students and the textiles programme leader. To discuss and share ideas about the work seen, develop your learning logs and enhance your own creative output.
