Join OCA tutor, artist, and Moving Image Unit Leader (Fact + Fiction) Ruth Maclennan on Saturday 15 December at Tintype Gallery in London.

The visit will run from 2pm to 5pm in Tintype Gallery, where a series of new film commissions — Essex Road V — are being projected in the gallery window. Before the screening there will be a unique opportunity to discuss the films with the gallery director, Teresa Grimes, and with Ruth whose film Zigni was commissioned for Essex Road II (and viewable on Tintype’s website along with all the earlier Essex Road commissions). The conversation may address what it means to commission moving image for a particular place, about making work on location and about the gallery’s programme more broadly. Students are invited to bring any work in progress they feel relevant for discussion also — not necessarily moving image work.

Tintype’s Essex Road project has reached its landmark fifth birthday. Now a popular, much anticipated local event, it has become recognized as a moving-image event — enabling eight artists each year to make new work. 40 films commissioned and produced, back-projected into the gallery’s window, viewed from the street. A form of public art.

The driving force behind it is the desire to work with outstanding artists to produce new work shown in an unusual context. The brief is very simple, to make a short film that is a response to one London street — Essex Road — the results have been astonishingly diverse. Turning a prism onto a very specific locale, (perhaps counter intuitively), encourages a magnificently adventurous response.

The writer and critic George Vasey recently wrote about ‘strategic regionalism’ — how do artists envisage and talk to specific locales and particular communities? Strategic regionalism, he suggests, ‘is a way of thinking and doing that remains tied to a location while being in a conversation with the national and international’.
