Second year Bucks uni students with tutor Phil Dearman in the middle.

When I was uni (nearly a decade ago) there was nothing more exciting than jumping on the train from High Wycombe and presenting your work to a creative team in a London agency. I loved the fancy receptions, the snacks and the ‘ahh’ moment when the creative team critting your work politely tear it to shreds.

Being ex-Bucks myself, I always try and set a brief for Phil’s students. This year we gave them a tricky media neutral, low budget brief. Being able to make famous work with the minimum resource is a skill every graduating wannabe creative will need to learn. Once you crack it, you’ll become your own (very powerful) two person agency.

The students gave it everything they had. There were events, stunts, apps and a Netflix series. A couple of the teams presented good, practical campaigns then right at the end mentioned ideas they’d only just got to that excited us a lot more than the first thoughts they’d spent days working up. The ideas they mentioned at the end all came from culture, were the right side of crazy and got Emily and I excited.

So don’t jump straight to executing the first good idea you have. Keep going. Embrace the silly, embrace culture and when you get something that makes you smile, go for it.

Thank you Bucks second years, thank you Phil Dearman.

We’ll see you next year.
