Welcome to this week’s installment of, ‘Natalie Tries New Beer While Road-tripping Across the Midwest and East Coast!’ As most of you can relate, things have gotten a bit stale in my household. Staring at the same four walls and my partner’s face for the last 5 months has been fine and all, but I miss my buds. That’s why I was so excited (and lowkey terrified) to go on a 10-day roadtrip to Missouri for a wedding. Keller and I decided to make an experience of this wedding adventure by going on a big loop from Syracuse to Chicago followed by Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and finally back to the Cuse. And naturally, I’m going to try as many new beers along the way as I can.

Just as a quick note to y’all — I have an autoimmune disease, so I’ve been taking every precaution possible on this trip. Face masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and lots of social distancing galore. We also only visited friends and family that have also been following the same precautions to make sure we were all as safe as possible. While times are scary, if you’re safe about seeing others, I feel like it’s a good way to keep yourself sane.

Anywho, onto the beer review!

Beer Name: Hamm’s Premium

Origin: Theodore Hamm Brewing Company, St. Paul, Minnesota

Brewery Founded: 1856

ABV: 4.7%

Price: $12.99 for a 24-pack (talk about a deal!)

Taste: I have to admit that this wasn’t actually the first time I have had Hamm’s. The first time I tasted this beer was in 2018 when a few coworkers and I roadtripped to Massachusetts to see a US Men’s National Soccer Team match. My buds went into a gas station while I was filling up the gas tank to get some pregame snacks and libations and came out with a case of Hamm’s. Cracking open this Hamm’s in my cousin’s house in Chicago brought back all the good memz while making some more good ones this time around.

USA vs. Peru

Overall, the taste is a classic, cheap lager taste. This is like the PBR of the North (as I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hamm’s in-store around my hometown or where I went to college in Georgia). It’s such a good, refreshing cheap beer that’s not too carbonated and not too tasteless.

How Do I Feel? Incredibly content. Hamm’s is both delicious and easy to drink. We were sipping on our beers while doing the quintessential quarantine project: putting together a 1,000 piece puzzle. What a crazy Friday night, I know.

Poundability: 11/10. I challenge any of our wonderful readers to a shotgun challenge of Hamm’s. It’ll be wonderful.

When To Drink Hamm’s: This is definitely an anytime beer in my book. It’s light enough to be great on a summer day, but also satisfying enough to be a great pairing for a chill meal at home (I think burgers would be an awesome combo). Also Hamm’s is cheap as heck AND comes in tall boys; it’s a win-win for everyone, in my opinion.

Overall: 8/10. If you want a cheap, good tasting tall boy, this is the one for you, folks!

I loved how Erin dedicated her last review to educating ourselves and being better people, so I’m going to do the same! My review is dedicated to the ongoing Hong Kong protests centering on democracy, government control, and a million other small facets that are incredibly complex. On this roadtrip my partner and I are on, we listened to an ‘Antifada’ podcast episode with Wilfred Chan called “Be Water.” It was incredibly eye-opening and made me want to really dive into Hong Kong and how it got to where it is today. Listen to episode 106 here: https://fans.fm/theantifada

Here’s to learning, tall boys, and cheap beer!

Cheers,

Natalie
