ImPaled Ale: Middle Ages Brewing Company
I returned, y’all.
Back from whence I came, I took a business trip up to see Syracuse (and Natalie, obviously). With me I brought many Texas gifts for my lovely co-writer. I also brought my thirst for Upstate NY brewskies.
Natalie and my partner recently took up bouldering as a hobby and exercise of choice. I seldom tag along, but thoroughly enjoy it when I do.
Natalie took me to Central Rock Gym and we crawled around like Spider-Man for a few hours before our hands and muscles gave out from us trying to defy gravity.
We made our way to Middle Ages Brewing Company down the road for a quick beer before dinner. This is a staple Syracuse beer brand, yet in my 6 years I’ve been in and around the city I had never been there.
Brief history: Middle Ages Brewing Company is actually the oldest brewery in Syracuse, at a adolescent age of 23 years.
With a Game of Thrones / castle feel, Middle Ages is a mess hall for commoners in the city, looking to raise a pint to their brethren and sistren after a well-won battle. Natalie and I were there for it.
Beer name: ImPaled Ale
Brewery, city, and country of origin: Middle Ages Brewing Company, Syracuse, NY
Year created: Circa 1995
ABV: 6.5% ABV
Cost: $5 for a pint
Taste: Let’s be real, I’m one of those suckers that buys beers based on their cool names. This time around, I was not disappointed. ImPaled was a thirst-quenching brew fitting for after a rigorous workout. In my notes, I classified it as a “scrumptious” beer, which in Erin-speak means that it was something that I could drink over and over again. It has a malty upfront flavor with light hoppy compliments (without being too aggressive as an IPA).
Haha, my notes also say, “This beer has a nice body just like meeeee!”
I think I’m hilarious, y’all.
How Do I Feel? After a solid two hours of bouldering at the rock gym, it feels absolutely healing to hold a cold beer between my blistered hands and being amongst the buzz of 5 o’clockers. Oh YEAH, also I was THRILLED to be in the presence of my best bud Natalie! The WLTB squadron back in their natural environment crushing the day and crushing beers.
Poundability factor: This is a very poundable beer and I would’ve done so if I wasn’t exhausted with an empty stomach. #responsible
Overall rating: 8/10 Listen y’all, I’ve been bopping around Syracuse for 6ish years and this is the first freakin’ time I’ve been to Middle Ages. It’s awesome! I also very much enjoyed ImPaled Ale and would definitely drink again. Grab one the next time you’re downtown, Cuse kids (21+, obvi).
BOUNCING BACK FROM SLACKING! Thanks for being patient and supportive while we’ve not been posting blogs. April showers had us in a FUNK!
