PETER’S BRAND DUTCH STYLE PILSNER

Every time I walk into Trader Joe’s, I beeline for the free samples. I’ve added a new destination to that beeline, and that’s to the beer section. There’s an assortment of tall boys hanging out in that area so I ripped a couple out of several 6-pack rings* and built my own tall boy 6-pack.

*Wow, I took packaged beers OUT of their packages to make my own 6-pack? Savage, much? Well FUN FACT**, haters: I asked a crew member at Trader Joe’s the build-your-own etiquette and they said you can open whatever boxed/ringed beers so you can taste all the things. Yes, it may look like they got partially robbed, but they’re apparently cool with it.

**DOUBLE FUN FACT: If you wanna taste anything at TJ’s, you just have to ask a crew member and they can open anything you want for a snackeroo. No alcohol, though.

Here’s what I got for this week’s review!

Beer Name: Peter’s Brand Dutch Style Pilsner
City and Country of Origin: Breda, Netherlands
Year Created: Not printed on the can and I can’t find Union Export Brewery on the internet to save my life.
ABV: 5.0%
Cost: $1.25 for a tall boy or $7.50 for a 6-pack

My buddy, Horse, and I posing for a blog photo.

Taste: Now THIS is what a standard pilsner should taste like. It’s lemony, fresh, with a bright aftertaste. This is a beer expectation quencher. Even though this beer has no internet presence whatsoever, it stands out for me. It has an ever so slight metallic taste that some light beers overdo.

How Do I Feel? My dad is all about pilsners and always took me to a place called Sudwerk in Davis, CA after long road trips. My brother and I would get chicken tenders but he would always get a pilsner. This smell reminds me of this place. Post sip, this beer has a burpable warm throat feeling.

When To Drink Peter’s Brand Dutch Style Pilsner? This is a barbeque beer. Having a hot day and trying to cool down? Crack open a cold Peter’s. In addition to being a BBQ beer, I’d classify this as a “studying beer,” or something that you can drink over long periods of time and not feel like shit. I feel like this would pair very well with eating shit food though, to contrast.

Overall Rating: 9/10

TRIPLE FUN FACT TO BRING IT ALL HOME: I was wondering what a Dutch Style Pilsner was so I Wikipedia’d it and like always, Wikepedia came through.

German-style Pilsner
Light straw to golden colour with more bitter or earthy taste — Jever, Beck’s, Bitburger, Flensburger, Holsten, König, Krombacher, Radeberger, Veltins, Warsteiner, Wernesgrüner, St Pauli Girl , Fürstenberg

Czech-style Pilsner
golden, full of colours, with high foaminess and lighter flavour — Pilsner Urquell, Budweiser, Gambrinus, Kozel, Svijany, Staropramen, Radegast

European-style Pilsner
has a slightly sweet taste, can be produced from other than barley malt — Dutch: Amstel, Grolsch, Heineken or Belgian: Jupiler, Stella Artois
