Latest from around the UN in response to the situation in Aleppo
The UN System is fully mobilized on all fronts when it comes to advocating for peace and security, working to end human rights violations, calling for access in order to provide life saving aid and much more.
Below is a recap of activities related to the situation in Aleppo over the past few days.
Security Council and Secretary-General
This week United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the fifteen members of the UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Aleppo that, “The Security Council has not exercised its preeminent responsibility with regard to the maintenance of international peace and security. History will not easily absolve us, but this failure compels us to do even more to offer the people of Aleppo our solidarity at this moment.”

Human Rights
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein also pleaded with the international community to heed the cries of the women, men and children being terrorized and slaughtered in Aleppo. He went on to call for urgent steps to ensure that the tens of thousands of people who have fled, surrendered or been captured are treated in line with international law.
Refugees
As they find safety in west Aleppo, displaced residents from the devastated east of the city are telling UNCHR, the UN Refugee Agency, about the violence and shortages that led them to run for their lives.

Food aid
The UN’s World Food Programme is ready to deliver emergency food assistance, for at least 120,000 people, to eastern Aleppo city should safe and secure access become possible.
