In his last press briefing to journalists before he ends his term at the end of this month, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon once again called attention to the carnage in Syria, saying that it “remains a gaping hole in the global conscience.”

Aleppo is now a synonym for hell.

As I told the Security Council three days ago, we have collectively failed the people of Syria. Peace will only prevail when it is accompanied by compassion, justice and accountability for the abominable crimes we have seen.

At a demonstration held outside UN Headquarters in New York City this week, Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson told staff participants:

I am proud to be standing with the staff of the United Nations here today to express our deep concern and outrage over the suffering of the people of Syria. We stand united in solidarity with the civilians and particularly the children who are suffering from abuses, indignity and destruction caused by ongoing violations of international norms. We call upon the Member States of the United Nations, in particular the Security Council, to take urgent action to end the horror in Syria.
