“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity. And its first chapter is New Years Day.” Edith Love Joy Pierce, author

I didn’t read a single book in the month of November.

I often read or audiobook two… three…four (or more!) books in a month. But this fall from the end of October through to the beginning of Christmas I just… couldn’t. I couldn’t pick up a book.

A symptom of the year, I think. 2020 has been a doozy.

But looking back on all the amazing books I read this year it’s hard to be pessimistic. In 2020 I rediscovered my love for poetry via 6 amazing new books of poems. I also re-visited some old favorite stories, found new authors to admire, and read more books than I have in the last five years (51 this year!)

My annual December look back at my reading list serves not just as an opportunity to share what I’ve loved about literature this year with others, but also as a chance to remind myself of all I’ve accomplished. Because with each book comes a memory from the year...
